Galt toys are perfect for spending some quality time with your children as they are designed to be fun, colourful and imaginative – really important for parents as well as children! The Galt range is quite extensive which means there really is something for everyone and there are some super examples of how educational toys can be fun. A British company, they have been around for ages. In fact, back in the ‘90s, my aunt would only buy Galt toys for my son as she said they were ‘the ones to turn to for educational toys’.
Much has been about modern childhood, lamenting the move away from traditional play due to technology and parental time constraints. As a lone parent, I often felt as though I was not giving my children enough of my time to play which, of course, made me feel rotten. We eventually devised a play timetable together – a time each day when technology was turned off (work and play) and ‘traditional play’ ensued. More often than not, they would get a Galt toy or kit off the shelf!
For little ones, sensory blocks are just brilliant! Sensory toys are designed to stimulate the senses (sometimes all at once!) and these Galt blocks have bright, contrasting colours, different textures, and jingles and crinkles which will engage your baby’s developing visual, auditory and tactile senses. You can play peekaboo with the mirror and encourage their fine motor skills by helping them grasp and stack the blocks (a good bit of hand-eye co-ordination there). They will begin to problem solve as they work out where the velcro squares are to stick together and build.
I also really like this activity ball which, again, is colourful and interactive. It is super soft and, because it is inflatable, it is lightweight which means when your baby shows their awesome throwing skills and it lands on your face, it won’t hurt as much!
When it comes to science, Galt is best known these days for their Labs and their Horrible Science range – awesome boxes of STEM fun. Aimed at five years and upwards, these themed kits approach all areas of science in a really accessible manner. As I have stated many times before, science really excites me and I absolutely love doing experiments – possible more than my children ever did! Galt Labs give you everything you need to do some proper experiments in your own kitchen/lab! This Giant Science Lab even comes with a lab coat and goggles!
Based on the books, the Horrible Science range really does delve into the trivial, unusual, gory, or unpleasant parts of science! Aimed at eight years and upwards, these are perfect for your young scientist who like a bit of yick!
The Really Rotten Experiments kit makes me shudder however my niece absolutely loves getting her hands ‘dirty’ and thoroughly enjoys telling her family about how she has made vile vomit!
Galt have got it right with these kits – they have made them appealing, fun and children really get a chance to understand the science behind the experiments. I think there has to always be that element of wonder and surprise in learning and these are wonderful opportunities for you to experience this with your children. Timetable in some play time and do some extraordinary science!
